Where Do Tattoos Hurt the Least? The Real Talk from Your Lower East Side Tattoo Artist

Hey there, tattoo lovers!

Jaz here, co-owner and artist at Orchard Street Tattoo in the heart of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Let me tell you, after thousands of hours behind the tattoo machine, I've seen every pain reaction imaginable—and I'm here to spill the tea on where tattoos actually hurt the least (and most).

The Sweet Spots: Where Tattoos Are Most Comfortable

If you're wondering where to place your first tattoo or you're just not trying to white-knuckle through your session, here are the body parts that typically rank lowest on the pain scale:

Outer Arms and Shoulders - These areas are chef's kiss for tattooing. Plenty of muscle, minimal nerve endings, and enough padding to make the experience pretty chill. The outer bicep and shoulder cap are genuinely great spots if you want to ease into the tattoo world.

Forearms - One of my personal favorites to tattoo! The forearm has good muscle coverage and tends to be one of the easier spots for most people. Plus, you get to watch the artwork come to life, which is a fun distraction from any discomfort.

Outer Thighs and Side of Legs - Similar deal here. Good muscle coverage, not too bony, and most people breeze through outer thigh and side-of-leg pieces. These are some of my go-to recommendations for larger designs.

Behind the Ear - Surprise! While you might think this spot would be terrible, behind the ear is actually pretty tolerable for most folks. The pieces tend to be small and quick, which helps, and the pain level is usually way more manageable than people expect.

The Spicy Spots: Proceed with Caution

Now let's talk about the places that'll have you questioning your life choices:

Ribs - Oof. The ribs are infamous for a reason. I once had this client, and I'm talking about a guy who looked like he could bench press a small car, all muscle, covered in tattoos, the whole intimidating package. He came in wanting a rib piece, and within the first 30 minutes, this absolute unit of a human was sweating, breathing like he was in Lamaze class, and asking for breaks every five minutes.

No shame in his game, rib tattoos are NO JOKE. There's practically nothing between your skin and bone there, and every pass of the needle vibrates through your entire torso. Even the toughest clients tap out or need extra sessions to get through rib work. Respect to anyone who commits to rib tattoos because they earn it.

Buttocks - Okay, speaking from personal experience here (yes, I have ink on my butt), this spot is WAY more intense than you'd think! I went into it thinking, "Hey, lots of cushioning, this should be a breeze," and let me tell you, I was WRONG. That area is surprisingly sensitive, and the pain caught me completely off guard. Every pass of the needle had me rethinking my choices. Sure, maybe I just have a weirdly sensitive butt, but don't let anyone fool you into thinking it's automatically comfortable just because there's padding. Sitting afterward was also a nightmare, and explaining to people why you're standing at every social gathering for a week is its own special kind of awkward!

Calves - Plot twist! While some people do fine here, calves can actually be pretty uncomfortable. That shin bone is right there, and depending on how the design wraps, you might catch some surprisingly spicy spots. It's definitely more intense than people expect.

Feet and Ankles - Thin skin, lots of nerve endings, and bones right under the surface. It's a triple threat of ouch.

Inner Arms and Elbows - The ditch (inner elbow area) is notoriously spicy. Way more sensitive than the outer arm.

Spine, Sternum, and Any Bony Areas - If you can feel bone directly under your skin, you're gonna feel that needle more intensely.

Here's the Thing About Pain...

Pain is super subjective. I've had tiny clients sail through full sleeves while big tough guys nearly pass out from a small wrist piece. Your pain tolerance, hydration, sleep, stress levels, and even where you are in your menstrual cycle (for those who have one) can all affect how much a tattoo hurts.
