The Untold Story: Black Women in Tattooing (And Why We're Just Getting Started)

Let's talk about something that doesn't get nearly enough shine in the tattoo world: the incredible legacy of Black women in this industry. As a Black female tattoo artist and co-owner of Orchard Street Tattoos here in the Lower East Side, I'm constantly inspired by the pioneers who paved the way for artists like me to pick up a machine and create magic on skin.

The OGs Who Started It All

Here's the thing that blows my mind: Black women have been absolutely crushing it in tattooing since way back, but their stories often get left out of the mainstream narrative. Let's change that right now.

While the tattoo industry in America was predominantly white and male for most of the 20th century, Black women were quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) breaking barriers and building their own spaces in the craft. From the early days when tattooing was still considered taboo, Black women were getting inked, learning the art, and eventually picking up the needle themselves, often against incredible odds.

Breaking Through the Boys' Club

The tattoo world wasn't exactly rolling out the welcome mat for women, let alone Black women. We're talking about fighting against both sexism and racism in an industry that was already operating on the margins of society. But you know what? That just made the sisters who pushed through even more legendary.

Black female tattoo artists had to create their own opportunities, often training themselves or learning through sheer determination. They built clientele in their communities, worked out of homes and small shops, and slowly but surely earned respect through undeniable talent and artistry.

Artists like Bré Davis, Hannah Flowers, Tyra Juliet, and so many others are not just participating in tattoo culture, they're actively shaping and redefining it. They're proving that our perspectives, our artistry, and our skin deserve to be celebrated in this space.
